The Oberon Waste Depot was temporarily closed this morning (Thursday, 5 February 2026) following a fire in the tip face. The incident was promptly managed, and the facility has reopened in time for the afternoon session.
We appreciate the community's patience and cooperation while safety procedures were carried out.
Incidents such as this highlight the importance of placing the right items into the right waste systems. Certain waste materials can cause fires and should never be disposed of in general household rubbish.

Lithium batteries can overheat, spark or catch fire when damaged or compacted. This includes batteries inside everyday items such as mobile phones and electronic devices, tools, toys and vapes

All batteries, regardless of size, must be disposed of separately in the Community Recycling Centre or other collection points within the Oberon LGA.

Aerosols and other pressurised containers can explode when crushed, posing a serious risk to workers and equipment.
Ashes must be completely cool before disposal and should never be placed in general waste while warm. Hot embers can remain active for many hours and cause fires in bins or waste piles.
This includes items such as paint, solvents, petrol, diesel, engine oil, pesticides and household chemicals. These materials require specialised disposal and must not go into general waste. We have chemical collection points at the Community Recycling Centre at the Oberon Waste Depot.
