LATEST NEWS FROM MAYOR MARK KELLAM 9 MARCH 2023

It was a wonderful night on Wednesday when I had the great pleasure to host the International Women’s Day Dinner at the Showground. The theme for IWD this year is #embrace equity. Over 100 women and a small number of men enjoyed the food, the company and hearing Kathy Sajowitz (current Citizen of the Year), Daria Olney (Young Citizen of the Year) and Lucy East (driving force behind Malachi Hall) share their life experiences.
In the next month or so Council will be undertaking a Community Engagement Survey to gather views from community members in relation to Council services, community attitudes and ideas. This survey will allow us to gauge community expectations for the coming years. These results will inform our forward planning and will also provide a baseline for our usual community consultation program in May. A variety of methods will be used by the survey company in contacting community members including on line, phone and mail.
The Showground has been a very busy area, the last month or so. The very successful Oberon Show was in early February and was followed by an equally successful Rodeo later in the month. Last weekend was a huge Campdraft event over three days, as well as the monthly market and next weekend the Swap Meet occurs on Sunday 12 March.
Great to see the Showground so well used!
Council hosts a Welcome to Oberon event for any residents who have arrived in our area over the last 2 years.
This year the event will be held at the Showground Pavilion on 31 March from 4.30pm to 6.30pm.
Community groups, service clubs, sporting groups and interest groups will be there to provide information to our new residents.
Come along and join us for a chat, some nibbles and a drink, meet some people and learn more about your new home. Current residents are welcome if they bring some new people along!
The Central West Joint Organisation is a grouping of Councils which stretch from Oberon and Lithgow in the east, to Lachlan shire in the west. The Joint Organisation has a number of priorities including better rural health, roads and infrastructure, regional prosperity and water security.
A new priority has been added recently which is the “Transition to a sustainable, secure and affordable energy future”. I have been appointed to lead this priority which recognises the direction the energy sector is moving and the major role our area and the Central West in general, will play in that transition for NSW.
Adopting the priority provides the resources and the ability for the Joint Organisation to influence both State and Federal Governments and collectively work for a better result for our communities.
