Last Tuesday night at the Ordinary Council meeting the routine midterm election for Mayor and Deputy Mayor was held. The Councillors voted to retain myself as Mayor and Councillor Andrew McKibbin as Deputy Mayor until the next Local Government election in September 2024.

The upcoming long weekend will be a welcome break for many people and will also bring lots of visitors to our town and area.  There are a number of events in our area for both locals and visitors during the weekend.

The Oberon Markets have been brought forward a week to Saturday (September 30) to cater for the anticipated visitors. The Markets will be open at the Showgrounds from 9.00 with plenty of produce, handcrafts and gift items for early Christmas shoppers.  The weather forecast is pretty good for the weekend.

The Malachi is hosting a model railway exhibition from Saturday through to Tuesday. There are 35 separate exhibitors and I’m told that the size and scope of the exhibition has already generated enormous interest within, and beyond, the model railway community. Entry is $10 per person (or $20 for a family).

The exhibitors will be setting up their displays on Friday so there may be some parking restrictions in front of the hall.

Mayfield Gardens is in the midst of its Spring Festival. As part of that a 3-day music and entertainment segment has been introduced for the long weekend with a mixture of bands, ensembles and performers. Oberon 2787 residents can have free entry on Monday for the entertainment and then roam the gardens for the rest of the day!

There is lots more happening in our district over the next couple of months including more Malachi events, the Oberon Bull Futurity, Oberon Tarana Heritage Railway events and the Council organised Outdoor Festival. Keep an eye out for posters, online advertising and in this column for details.

The Legends Wall in the Common is almost complete with only three more plaques to be installed – hopefully by the end of this week. There will be a formal opening in the near future but, in the meantime, go and have a look and read about our Local Legends and their contribution to our district.

It is now almost 3 months since the Library and Community Centre was opened and it has been recognised by users as a real asset to our LGA. There are a wide range of community organisations using the centre including U3A Tai Chi, Bridge and other card groups, Creative Fibre, Pilates, sewing, knitting and current affairs groups. There have been art exhibitions and presentations to community groups and the various activity and library spaces are used regularly by individuals studying or simply having a space to work from. The librarian has as reported significantly greater patronage for the library.

It is a great success and is working just the way we imagined!
