Author talk - Kim Kelly

Kim Kelly

Friends of Oberon Library are happy to present their first Author Talk for 2024 on Friday 22nd March at the Oberon Library & Community Centre commencing at 5.30pm.  Light refreshments will be served.

Kim Kelly will introduce her latest book, Ladies’ Rest and Writing Room, winner of the inaugural Finlay Lloyd 20/40 Prize, a new Australian Independent Literary Publishing Prize for fiction and non-fiction.

Set in 1922 in Sydney’s once-famous Farmer’s Department Store, Ladies’ Rest and Writing Room tells the story of two young women grappling with devastating grief in the wake of World War One. Their paths cross unexpectedly in the department store’s Ladies’ Rest and Writing Room, and recognition flares …

WHY THE JUDGES LIKED IT

‘Kelly sweeps the reader into the lives and passions of her two central characters and into the bustling city of Sydney in the 1920s. A powerfully moving book that sparkles with vitality. It’s rare to come across a work of deep psychological insight conveyed with such verve and lightness of touch.’ And the Age/Sydney Morning Herald said: ‘Kim Kelly’s spry and endearing period novella … offers an elegant tonic for grief.’

Kim who is grateful to live on Wiradjuri country in beautiful Millthorpe, is the author of twelve novels, including the critically acclaimed Wild Chicory and The Rat Catcher: A Love Story, which was longlisted for the 2022 ARA Historical Novel Prize. Kim is also a book editor and is researching a PhD in Australian historical fiction.
