WINTER WEATHER REMINDER FOR MOTORISTS TO TAKE CARE ON ICY ROADS

Warning about Icy Conditions!

Roads and Maritime Services has issued a reminder for motorists to take care driving during the winter months.

Winter weather is unpredictable and there can be sudden drops in temperature that mean road conditions can change quickly and driving on icy roads can be challenging, even for experienced motorists on the roads they know well.

Quick Checklist for safe motoring in icy conditions –

• Obey speed advisory signs and be prepared to reduce speed in line with the conditions

• Be alert for ice on the road particularly in shaded or low lying areas

• Drive with your headlights on

Ice related crashes generally occur between 6am and 10am or in the evening when surface moisture and dew can freeze into a transparent layer of ice.

If you hit ice, travelling at a reduced speed will help drivers maintain control of their vehicle and reduce the force of the impact if there’s a collision.
