Media Release - Council News
Release: Thursday 28 February 2013

I was pleased to attend a Gala Dinner celebrating the Bicentenary of the Crossing of the Blue Mountains held in Katoomba last Friday.  The guest of honour at the dinner was Her Excellency Professor Marie Bashir AC CVO Governor of NSW who is the Patron of the Blue Mountains Crossings Bicentenary commemoration.

The First Crossing of the Blue Mountains by explorers Gregory Blaxland, William Charles Wentworth and William Lawson is cause for celebration because the 1813 crossing was the first to be officially recognised.  It led to subsequent survey by George Evans, road building by convicts under the leadership of William Cox and the proclamation of Bathurst as the first inland settlement by Governor Macquarie in 1815.

The dinner was also attended by descendants of the three explorers and was a fitting event to celebrate this great milestone in Australia's history.

There are a number of activities planned to celebrate Seniors Week this year.  Council will be hosting an event at the Oberon RSL Club on Friday 22 March 2013, commencing at 12 noon.  Entertainment will be provided by a Barber Shop Quartet and a Professional Storyteller.  Lunch will be served by Hospitality students from Oberon High School and St Joseph's Catholic School.  Entry is free and all seniors from the Oberon Shire are welcome to come along and enjoy the day.

During the community consultation undertaken as part of the development of the Council's Community Strategic Plan, Council made a commitment to hold quarterly meetings in the village areas.

Council is planning to hold its March Ordinary Meeting in Black Springs and members of the public are welcome to attend and observe the Council Meeting.  The Meeting will be held in the Black Springs Community Hall, cnr Dog Rocks Road and Campbells River Road, BLACK SPRINGS on Tuesday 19 March 2013, commencing at 5.30pm.

I believe this is a great initiative and gives members of the village and rural community's greater access to Council activities.  I hope to see many local's at the meeting.
