Oberon Council News - 03 September 2015

The Oberon NAG’s (No Amalgamation Group) have planned a trip to Bathurst on September 7th to join the “Save Our Councils” group from Mosman who are coming to Bathurst to present a letter to Minister Paul Toole stating their opposition to forced amalgamations. If you would like to support NAG’s and go along on the 7th there is a list at Council to add your name.  Alternately you could write to Ministers Toole & Cobb, Premier Baird and Opposition Leader Luke Foley stating your views. There is information available to assist should you require it – you can contact me or any other Councillor to access this material.

Members of the Oberon Youth Council are attending the Annual Youth Conference hosted by Eurobodalla Shire Council in September, I hope they not only have an enjoyable time but bring back ideas and initiatives they can implement here in Oberon. Look out for the Fathers Day Sausage Sizzle in the Main St on Sat Sept 5th  This is a Youth Council fundraiser with great raffle prizes to be won.

Council will soon be calling for interested community members to join the Section 355 Committee to oversee the Black Springs Hall and Tennis Courts. A Sect. 355 Committee acts as a conduit between council and the community in a given area. In this instance it will be to generate community activities in Black Springs and recommendations as to how the hall can be best utilised and managed. If this interests you please contact Clr Kerry Gibbons who will chair this committee. 6336 0830

Along with the GM & OBTA representatives I attended a Destination NSW Forum on Regional Tourism. The forum was to work on strategies to restructure and create super Regional Tourism Organisations who will market NSW and bring tourists to the state; it will then be the role of Local Tourism Organisations such as OBTA in Oberon to promote their areas to attract these tourists. One emerging market is young Asian tourists looking for adventure experiences rather than city based activities, Oberon would be perfectly placed for this initiative.  It is proposed that the Blue Mountains would be included with Penrith and the Hawkesbury tourism regions. A report will go to the minister later this year.
