Get Reading is Australia’s annual celebration of books ‘you can’t put down’. It is an Australian Government initiative developed through the Australian Council for the Arts. The purpose of the promotion is to encourage Australians to pick up a book and ‘Get Reading’. All genres are covered from picture books to history, memoirs, and popular fiction. Over 50 titles are chosen with usually twelve suitable for children and young adults. The library currently has 20 of these great new titles available for loan. How many can you read?
Questions Of Travel by Michelle de Kretser took out this years’ Miles Franklin Award. This is a mesmerising novel charting two parallel but very different lives - Laura is a freelance travel writer and Ravi dreams of being a tourist. This is a book to make you yearn for faraway places and renew your appreciation of home.
The Shadow Year by Hannah Richell tells the story of five friends, in the summer of 1980, who stumble upon an abandoned cottage in the English countryside. The cottage becomes an escape from everyday life, with days spent by the lake and intimate evenings by the fire, but as the seasons change so do relationships. This is a story of tragedy, lies and betrayal, beautifully capturing different shades of relationships with a most surprising ending!
The Young Lion by Blanche d’Alpuget is the first book in a series about the powerful Plantagenet family that ruled Britain during the twelfth century. Extremely well researched this book has all the sexual and political intrigue most recently associated with The Game of Thrones. Dukes seduce Queens, Kings seduce maids and Princes plot the overthrow of thrones in this riveting tale of forbidden love, family ambition, vengeance and intrigue.
Dreaming Of Zhou Gong is the first book in a trilogy set in ancient China, and is written by Traci Harding, a master of historical fantasy. It is the story of Hudan, one of the female shamans from the sacred mountain of Li Shan. This is definitely a page turner, and once you have finished reading the Dreaming of Zhou Gong you can move on to the other two enthralling books in the trilogy.
The first chapter of each of these titles can be downloaded and read at getreading.com.au.
We look forward to seeing you at the Library soon!
