Latest News from Mayor Kathy Sajowitz - Thursday 7 December 2017

I am very pleased to welcome Borg Manufacturing as a major sponsor of Oberon’s 2018 Australia Day Event. The generosity of John and Michael Borg is acknowledged and appreciated. We are as yet unaware who our 2018 Australia Day Ambassador will be, but plans are well underway for the event. The venue will once again be the Oberon Showground.

A reminder for those that require constant power for life support equipment, to register/update their contact details with their energy provider. Unplanned power outages often occur – particularly during the storm season so this is a situation which needs to be managed by both customer and energy provider. A back up plan is essential to operate medical equipment should an outage occur. Life support equipment includes but is not limited to - an oxygen concentrator, a dialysis machine, a chronic positive airways pressure respirator or a ventilator for life support.

Minister for Lands Hon. Paul Toole has advised that as part of the NSW Government overall review of Crown Land across the state, Crown Land Managers, tenure holders and the wider community are being encouraged to have their say on the new Crown Land Community Engagement Strategy. The strategy will outline the requirements for engaging licenses, leases and sales and is central to improving transparency and communication with the community on crown land decisions – so it’s important to hear from as many groups and individuals as possible. The draft strategy is on public exhibit until December 10. For more information, call Crown Lands and Water on 1300 886 235 or visit

I was distressed to learn that the Anglican Diocese of Bathurst has decided to close and sell St Aidans Church at Black Springs in order to fulfil its obligations to compensate victims of abuse suffered under its jurisdiction. This will be a sad day for the Black Springs and Burraga communities. The Little Tin Church means much too many.

For Waste to Art enthusiasts I can advise that the 2018 W2A Competition theme is polystyrene (work does not have to be made in this medium it is a suggested theme only). The Regional Exhibition will be held in Narromine from June 23 – July 21 which means our local competition will need to be held in April or May. As soon as the committee have worked out suitable date they will advise.

At the November Council Meeting it was resolved to once again include the position of Economic Development/Tourism Manager into the staff structure. With economic development vital for the growth of the town and tourism the fastest growing economy in Australia, Oberon will be well placed into the future to take advantage of the numerous opportunities available.

I would like to congratulate Oberon High School student Peta McGrath who as part of the Premiers Anzac Memorial Scholarship Program, has been selected as one of the successful applicants to travel to Europe during June/July 2018 to tour memorial sites and battlefields in Belgium and France. Students from over one hundred schools applied to be part of what I am certain will be a memorable and amazing experience for these students. Well done Peta!

Only eighteen more sleeps until Santa arrives……..
