Happy New Year to all Oberon residents, I hope 2017 is happy healthy and safe for you all. I have been advised that during 2016 sixty-seven new babies were born to Oberon parents. Congratulations to the new parents and a very warm welcome to some of our newest residents.
Shooters Fishers & Farmers State Leader Robert Borsak along with the Local Member for Orange Phil Donato will be visiting Oberon on Saturday 21 January 2017 to speak with members of the Oberon community about issues relevant to them, I imagine one topic of discussion will be Mr Borsak’s plan to introduce a bill into the Upper House when Parliament resumes in February with the aim of blocking the forced amalgamation of Councils and giving communities affected by this undemocratic process the opportunity to say whether they support a merger or not. Mr Borsak has indicated there is support amongst the Labour Party, the Greens and Fred Nile for this proposed bill and he is confident it will pass the Upper House. If you would like to meet Mr Borsak and Mr Donato they will be at the Oberon Community Centre in Fleming St Oberon at 10am on Saturday 21 January 2017.
If you have not yet taken the opportunity to fill out the online poll, you have until 20 January 2017 to participate and have your say in the future direction of Oberon. Council values your input. The survey can be filled in on either the Oberon Facebook page or the Oberon Council webpage.
I am pleased to announce Oberon’s 2017 Australia Day Ambassador is Peter Greste, you may recall Peter – a journalist, was controversially arrested in Egypt in 2013 along with several associates and after a farcical
“trial” process was sentenced to seven years in prison. After huge international pressure and an unrelenting campaign by his family he was released without explanation and deported home. I am personally looking forward to meeting Peter at the celebrations on 26 January 2017 to be held at the Oberon Showground. Peter will assist in presenting the Australia Day Awards. If you have not submitted your entry into the Australia Day Colouring Competition, it must be done this week. Judging is imminent.
Something for your diary, on Wednesday 8 March 2017, I will be hosting the inaugural International Women’s Day Mayors Lunch. The 2017 theme for IWD is “Be Bold for Change” the event will be held at the Robert Hooper Community Centre and due to space limitations tickets will be limited to sixty, this will be a free event for Oberon women sponsored by Oberon Council. A gold coin donation will be encouraged and all monies raised on the day will be forwarded on behalf of the women of Oberon to the United Nations nominated charity for this year’s event. An inspirational guest speaker will be coming along for your enjoyment. If you would like to attend this event please contact Sharon Swannell at Council on 02 6329 8151. Sharon will be taking names and issuing tickets. Alternately you can contact me directly. I am sure the tickets will go quickly so don’t put this off.
On behalf of Council I would like to wish ex Mayor Keith Sullivan a speedy recovery.
