Latest News from Mayor Kathy Sajowitz - 12 September 2019

I am pleased to advise that this year the Oberon Council Local Government Golf Day will be held on Friday November 15. This hugely popular event has been running for fourteen years and is attended by our local community, local council, political and business representatives from the Central West Region. Last year’s event generated in excess of $30,000 into the community and raised $4000 which was donated to Can Assist and Drought Relief Projects, the same charities will be supported this year. More information and registration forms will be available in the near future.
I urge you all to support the recently launched Oberon Business and Tourism Association initiative “Buy Local Campaign” commencing in October; this campaign will benefit our local businesses and the community providing much needed support through these difficult times.
Nominations forms are now available for the 2020 Australia Day Awards. January 26th each year is when we acknowledge those who contribute to our community or achieve major goals by sheer hard work and commitment. A new category has been added for 2020 “Environmental Champion of the Year”. This category recognises individuals or organisations championing environmental initiatives in the local community such as litter reduction, using the return and earn scheme to fundraise for a meaningful cause, recycling initiatives etc. Please think about nominating an individual, volunteer, organisation, event or sporting team, we need to recognise those that have such a positive impact on society. Call into council or the Library and pick up a nomination form, the forms need to be lodged by close of business Friday November 1 2019, please do not leave this until the last minute - late nominations will not be considered.
Today is RU OK Day. We should be looking out for each other every day but today we make special mention to raise awareness that there are members of our community who may be silently struggling, sometimes all it takes to make a difference is for someone to take the trouble to ask if we are ok, so look around you and check if your neighbours and friends are “ok”.
The Oberon District Museum AGM is scheduled for September 15th at 3pm at the museum in Scotia Avenue. The new committee has achieved so much since the inaugural meeting but the ongoing support of the community is vital. That support can take many forms from active support to financial support so please attend if you are able. As well as the election of the next Committee, Col Roberts will present some information on what's been happening at the museum and what is planned for the coming months.
I am pleased to report that after extensive negotiation between Council staff and YMCA a twelve month contract has been signed to partner with the organisation to deliver local leisure and recreation services for Oberon. The agreement covers the operation of the Oberon Pool from October this year and the new Fitness Centre, which is under construction and planned to open in the coming months.  YMCA is a not for profit organisation and has a proven track record regionally in the delivery of physical, mental and social wellbeing of communities. I am particularly pleased that with its experience, should there be a demand (and I believe there will be) YMCA can offer the community, especially our young people easy access to its diverse programs. The organisation, with support from the Oberon Council will shortly begin a range of community and stakeholder sessions to ensure the needs and ideas of locals are being heard. This collaboration is a win win for Oberon – council have the facilities and YMCA the expertise. Staff will be sourced locally with the organisation providing all essential training and qualifications. Admission prices for the pool will not change for the coming year. A new website and set of social media accounts are under development for the Oberon Swimming Pool and Fitness Centre and residents will be informed when these are active to ensure access to real-time updates about the build, employment opportunities and official opening information.
