It was a pleasure to host fifty five women to the Inaugural International Women’s Day Mayoral lunch today at the Robert Hooper Community Centre. International Women’s Day is celebrated worldwide and acknowledges the political, cultural, social and economic achievements of women whilst also acknowledging the women who struggle daily for the day to day advantages we in this country enjoy. The theme this year is “Be Bold for Change” and both men and women are being called upon to  advocate and work towards gender equality and basic human rights especially in third world or war riven countries where it is the women and children that suffer most from the folly of human kind.

The keynote speaker at the event was Melanie Pearce from ABC Central West, Melanie was delightful, she made many friends today by sharing her stories about both the lighter and more serious side of women’s experiences in rural areas. Thank you to sponsors Oberon Council, Mayfield Gardens and the Green Fox for donations to the raffle which along with the sale of purple ribbons (IWD symbol) raised an amount of $240 which will be sent to UNIFEM Australia on behalf of the Women Of Oberon to support their nominated charity this year. Thank you for your company at what I hope will become an annual event.
