Media Release - Council News
Release: Thursday 22 August 2013

There has been a number of articles in the media recently regarding dangerous dogs. Councillor Evans was recently the victim of a dog attack where two dogs attacked Councillor Evans dog while it was being walked on a leash in Oberon. It was fortunate in this incident that two members of the public were able to come to Councillor Evan’s assistance.

Recently two dogs were involved in an attack on sheep at Titania Estate resulting in the death of two sheep. Both of these dogs have been declared dangerous and the owner has decided to euthanize the animals.

Council has a regulatory role in enforcing the Companion Animals Act 1998 and employ’s two casual Animal Control Officers who operate on a week about basis. The current practice is reactionary in that once an incident is reported the Animal Control Officer on duty takes appropriate action.

During normal operating hours most Companion Animal incidents, mainly stray dogs and dog attacks, are reported to Councils main reception area and referred to the Planning & Development Department for an initial assessment and then if appropriate the officer on duty is contacted for appropriate action.

For outside working hours a dedicated telephone no. 6329 8153 is provided for Animal Control which allows for any member of the public to log a complaint or request at any time. The Animal Control Officer on duty retrieves messages daily and actions appropriately. It is important that when reporting an incident a return phone number is left to allow the officers to respond.

This week I had the pleasure of visiting the Oberon Children’s Centre and the Parkview Kindergarten to present Oberon Sesquicentenary Bronze Medallions to the children and teachers at both facilities.

It was lovely to be able to get around all the schools in the LGA and present the medallions to the students over the past couple of weeks.
