Council News - Thursday 20 March 2014

Last Wednesday evening around 65 people attended the Fluoridation Information Night held at the Oberon RSL Club.

Presentations were made by three guest speakers.  The first speaker was Dr Shanti Sivaneswaran, Principal Advisor, Centre for Oral Health, Ministry of Health. The second speaker was Merilyn Haines, President of Fluoride Action Network Australia and this was followed by Dr Tony Brown, Associate Professor, University of Sydney.

Following the presentations the speakers then answered a number of questions asked by the members of the public in attendance. It was a very informative eventing and those in attendance found the presentations by the speakers very interesting.

Council will now hold two Community Forums to give members of the community a chance to come along and put forward their point of view.  Any questions presented at the Community Forums will be taken on notice and a response provided.

The first Community Forum will be held at the Oberon Showground Hall this evening, Thursday 20 March, commencing at 6.00pm.  The second Forum will be held next Wednesday 26 March at the Oberon RSL Club.  We hope to see a large number of community members in attendance at these sessions.

Oberon Council is participating in a Centroc health initiative, “Beyond the Range”, which is a program aimed at attracting more medical professionals to relocate across the Blue Mountains to western NSW.

Last week Councillor John Morgan and I met with the Executive Officer of Centroc, Jenny Bennett and Julia Andrews who is the content producer for the Beyond the Range program.  Jenny Bennett was extremely impressed with our level of service to the aged in our community.  Council currently manages 16 self care units in Oberon and it is pleasing to see construction underway for the new Aged Care facility, which will accommodate 66 people. For a small country town we are extremely progressive in this area.
