Media Release - Council News
Release: Thursday 17 October 2013

The Rural Fire Service have been kept busy over the past week with the declaration of a Section 44 Fire in the south of the Oberon Shire.

The fire was in rugged terrain in State Forest and National Parks land in the Werong area bordered by Banshea Road and Bourchier Road.  Due to the fire location and the high winds and low humidity present last Thursday the Rural Fire Service declared the fire and called in several helicopters to assist with both ferrying in fire fighters and carry out water bombing in the area.

Heavy earth moving equipment was also transported into the area and used to contain the fire.  The Rural Fire Service feared that if the weather conditions continued the fire could easily spread and they quickly provided resources to bring the fire under control.

Fire crews worked for a number of days in the area to ensure that the threat was removed and the area is now being monitored by the Forest Corporation until such time as the Oberon region receives significant rainfall.

Oberon was very busy last weekend with most accommodation providers fully booked for the Bathurst races.  The race provides enormous benefit for the Oberon community and it is pleasing to see that accommodation is again heavily booked this coming weekend for the opening of Mayfield Garden.

Mayfield Garden will be open on 19 & 20, 26 & 27 October and 2 & 3 November from 9.00am to 4.30pm. Gairlock Garden, which is located in the township of Oberon will also be open on these dates and the Oberon Garden Club will host their annual Open Garden Weekend on the 2 & 3 November.

Early in November the Oberon Tarana Heritage Rail group will be holding an Open Day.  This will be a great opportunity for people to come along to see the fantastic work being done by OTHR, have a sausage sizzle and see the miniature train display.
