The Arts

Oberon has an active cultural community embracing the arts, crafts, music, drama, and events. Several well known artists and craftspeople have studios in the district, which are open regularly or by appointment.

There are several active theatrical groups in the area with an annual pageant produced by the local Oberon community, a biannual melodrama produced by the O'Connell community and a very successful drama group "Wild Oats" which specialises in one act plays and has won several awards at the state level for performances and productions. more ..

Cobweb Craft Shop - Published: 27 Jan 2005
The Cobweb Craft Shop in Oberon Street has on display the 8 Bicentennial Tapestries, designed by artist Kim Rabbidge with half a million stitches stiched by over 70 local needleworkers over 13 thousand hours. The tapestries capture the essential Oberon: Lake Oberon, the forestry industry, snow, heritage buildings, Kanangra Walls and agriculture. more ..

Banners - Published: 11 Jan 2005
24 hand painted and appliqued banners for street display and some for local organisations were made by 40 needleworkers. These are on show for special occasions. They were designed and assembled at two workshops held in Oberon under the guidance of textile artist, Tore de Mestre. Several small banners hang in the Oberon Library at the corner of Dart and Fleming Streets. more ..

Oberon Art and Craft Exhibition - Published: 11 Jan 2005
The Oberon Art & Craft Exhibition is held on a weekend in mid November, attracting an ever rising standard of work from throughout the region. The committee has introduced a scheme that ensures that a number of purchases are guaranteed. Although the largest section of the exhibition is painting and works on paper, there is also representation from pottery, textiles and other crafts to give diversity and reflect the high standard of work. more ..

Oberon Agricultural Show - Published: 11 Jan 2005
The Oberon Agricultural Show, held over the second weekend in March, celebrated its centenary in 1999 . The full 2 day program includes livestock, ring events, produce, floral displays, cooking, harness racing, sideshows and novelty attractions. Needleworks and Spinners & Weavers - Published: 11 Jan 2005
Oberon has a strong Needleworkers Group and a Spinners and Weavers Guild, both of which produce high quality work. They exhibit during the Daffodil Festival and the Annual Art & Craft Exhibition when some items are for sale. more ..
